200 trees by the bees: first volunteers' planting session

Updated: Aug 1

Ōtaki Carbon Forests planted 200 ngaio, kānuka and ake ake last Saturday morning.

Over 20 volunteers trekked past colourful beehives up the steep hill at the back of Pukekaraka, and had all plants in the ground by lunchtime.

The general good buzz was helped by the sounds of increasingly active bees as the sun rose, warming their hives.

St. Mary's Catholic Mission was one of the first landowners/ kaitiaki joining Ōtaki Carbon Forests, in what's become a supportive group of people keen to get hands-on in raising Ōtaki's biodiversity, while lowering carbon emissions.

This was the first official Ōtaki Carbon Forests volunteers' planting session and the second planting since the project began less than a year ago.

Ōtaki Carbon Forests welcomes kaitiaki and landowners who are interested in planting on their land (of at least half a hectare) and everyone who wants to help get native trees in the ground.

We're on a mission to plant 40 hectares. Join us!
